Movie Review: Eat, Pray, Love

Wednesday, August 11, 2010
Picture 1

Last night I was invited to see a preview screening of Eat, Pray Love at the Legacy Place theater (on the Lux Level where you have armchair like seats and a waitress who brings you food and booze!) Of course, I was apprehensive going into it. While I know a good percentage of you didn’t love the book and found it self-indulgent and whiny, I loved it, which made the stakes higher for me. Unfortunately, it did disappoint. It was entertaining, but lacked the depth and emotional recognition I found in the book. I actually found myself able to see why people might see the

story as whiny and self-indulgent. The screenwriters kind of glossed over the real devestation and desperation Gilbert felt in her life and so it made my

ability to connect with the character much harder. I know there is a time limit and you can only develop so much, but they tidied up the story so much that it lost a lot of it’s soul. The pivotal bathroom floor scene for example, which is an important part of the book became a quick, “couple-tear-drop”, totally underwhelming moment. Also missing was the raw sense of humor- I laughed only a handful of times and while reading the book I remember laughing quite a bit. The brutal honesty and amusing anecdotes Gilbert wove into her recounting of her experience were watered down in the film.

The biggest problem is Julia Roberts in this role. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it is too difficult to separate “movie star Julia” from “Liz”. Whenever someone in the film called her character Liz I found myself being confused because all I saw and heard was Julia, with that big smile and cackling laugh. And frankly, it makes it hard to feel bad for her and feel her despair. Now I actually really like Julia Roberts, but this was a major case of miscasting. I would have liked to see someone like Michelle Williams, Laura Linney or Kate Winslet in this role, who has less of a giant Hollywood identity. Another character let down was Richard from Texas- my favorite character! In the book his one liners made me laugh out loud and warm my heart- and when I saw the real Richard on Oprah I loved him even more. But this Richard was kind of sad and not as feisty as the real one and some of his better lines were left out. Javier Bardem was good (is he ever bad?) and James Franco can certainly play a slightly caddish boyfriend without issue. A great character was that of Lucca Spaghetti in Italy, a delightful moment in the film.

Now it wasn’t all bad- the scenery was gorgeous and there were some really lovely moments that made me revisit why I need to read this book again. The general concept of self-discovery and looking inward, not in a self-indulgent way but in a desire to find out what REALLY makes you happy is one I personally need to be reminded of. So if you loved the book and want to see the movie, go see it! If you hated the book, absolutely skip it. If you have not read the book, it’s not the ideal way to experience Gilbert’s memoir, but it’s better than not experiencing it at all in my opinion.

jackie evancho america s got talent

Jackie Evancho

The 10-year-old opera singer impressed the judges Tuesday night during a live performance on "America's Got Talent." The public voted overwhelmingly

to keep her out of 20,000 YouTube videos submitted.

"I'm sort of half excited and half terrified," admitted judge Piers Morgan before the show which was filmed live in Hollywood, a first in its five-year history. "I have no

idea what's going to happen. Well, it's the most unpredictable show we've ever done."

Evancho hails from Pittsburgh and the little operatic small wonder is so good that if you listened without looking you'd think she was a seasoned opera

star. Her voice is at turns emotive, heartfelt and angelic.

"That is one of the most extraordinary performances I've seen on 'America's Got Talent'," said Morgan. Howie Mandel agreed and the judges relished in the fact that they found "talent" and a bonafide star in Evancho.

Evancho should advance to the next round with no problem, most likely. On Wednesday night's results show, we'll learn which YouTube acts will move on to the semi-finals.

This is one of those children bizarre it sounds like you have 40 years of age. She is 10 and is an adorable, cute blonde. Going to be popular. Luckily, she can return with an amazing voice. She sings “O Mio Babbino Caro”, which is no easy task (I’ve sung for competitions). Ido not like the way your voice is shifted to the back of the throat at times. It’s nicer when it is shiny and metallic. Still, she is very good. And not just because 10. She is good for anyone.

What a cutie. The judges love, she receives a standing ovation. How has this girl not actually auditioned for this show? Why you have to find it on YouTube?

Now, the reason for this girl (who sang an Italian aria) is different from the pianist’s because she’s more interesting to watch and listen. She just is. He may be the most talented person who made tonight, but if they advance? Not sure.

Anyway, she kept the kind of night, as Howie says without really tell. Please forward four acts of this group? If it’s four, I plutonic, Maestro Alexander Bui, Sperry Dan and Jackie Evancho – although I think it’s more Pizza Pat Vegas that three of the four acts.

What did you think the night of YouTube? And Jackie test YouTube and tonight’s performance is below, if you want to see.

Tyreke Evans Highway Arrest Video

Sunday, August 1, 2010
In this image from video provided by the California Highway Patrol Sacremento Kings player Tyreke Evans is arrested Monday May 31, 2010 after being stopped at gunpoiint. CHP officers say he was driving 120 to 130 miles per hour. Attorneys say he pleaded no contest to reckless driving, was sentenced to 80 hours of community service, ordered to take part in teen driving programs and lost his license for 30 days. Tyreke Evans was arrested for speeding about two months

ago. The California Highway Patrol has released the video of Evans speeding down Interstate 80 while a police helicopter watches his every swerve. If you’re not into race cars, the cops show up around the 7:40 mark. It kind of reminded me of the scene in The Wire when Kima got shot. Except, you know, I wasn’t crying at the end of this video.
Tyreke Evans: The NBA Rookie of the Year was “briefly detained” by police officers who say the Kings’ star was driving 100 mph on Interstate 80 in California. Cops approached Evans’ 2010 Mercedes-Benz S550 (price tag: over six figures) with guns drawn because the windows were tinted so dark they couldn’t see inside. Evans was cuffed, but quickly released without incident. He was on his way to play basketball. Evans was a model citizen at Memphis and then Sacramento, but inevitably, this 2007 drive-by shooting will be brought up anytime a story like the speeding ticket surfaces. In that incident, Evans was the driver and was never charged with anything. [Sac Bee]

The basketball court isn't the only place where Sacramento Kings player Tyreke Evans apparently likes to move fast.

A video released by the California Highway Patrol shows Evans speeding past vehicles on Interstate 80 in his purple Mercedes. CHP officers say he was driving 120 to 130 miles per hour.

The video of the 20-year-old NBA Rookie of the Year was shot from a plane on Memorial Day weekend.

After being stopped by police, Evans was arrested at gunpoint.

Authorities say the video offers evidence that Evans may have been racing another vehicle.

Attorneys say he pleaded no contest to reckless driving, was sentenced to 80 hours of community service, ordered to take part in teen driving programs and lost his license for 30 days.
